Discovery of an Afterlife’s ‘Mistakes We Make’ EP Release Party in Review

I realize that this post is extremely untimely but as the saying goes, better late than never!

We would like to officially announce the release of our brand new EP ‘Mistakes We Make’ which came out on May 25, 2019 at our EP release show hosted at Joe’s Grotto.

This was the biggest show of our career to date and we’re happy to report it was a success.

We had an absolute blast playing with some amazing local talent and even with a last minute cancellation we were thankfully able to pull it all off.

DoaA’s Final Show With Original Screamer Conner Posz

For those of you who missed it unfortunately you missed the last time our screamer Conner Posz will most likely ever perform with the band again and it was an incredibly special treat for all of us.

We are extremely appreciative of him reprising his role during ‘The Meadow’ and for our encore, ‘Another Year Without You Here.’

We wish Conner all the best and encourage you to check out his new band, Dead World Reclamation!

Thank You Audible Assault Entertainment

This was our very first headlining show where we picked the venue, the date, what bands would play, and all the minute details that go into putting a show on.

A HUGE thank you is in order to Steph Irvine of Audible Assault Entertainment because we couldn’t have done it without her. We absolutely love working with Steph and can’t imagine trusting anyone else with something this big for us.

If you’re a local band looking to start playing shows be sure to hit her and her company up because they treat their bands amazingly and always make sure the show goes on!

On Saturday February 9, 2019 we made our second appearance at Audible Assault Entertainment’s annual anniversary party and had a fantastic time rocking out and partying with so many great local bands.

We were the last band to play and really appreciate everyone staying so late to watch our set and for singing our songs so loudly! Words cannot describe how magical it is to hear you all sing the ending to ‘The Meadow’, a powerful song about the suicide of a close friend. This also marked the first time ever we didn’t end our set with this song because the crowd insisted we play an encore so we ended up ending with ‘A Tragedy Until We Forget’, an old classic DoaA jam.

Prescription Addiction - Mistakes We Make (Addiction)

A sinister addiction has been ripping it’s way through North America since the early 1990’s and it’s getting worse every year. Dubbed the ‘Opioid Epidemic’ by the mainstream media, overdoses from opioid drugs have claimed over 64,000 lives in 2016 alone.

That’s 64,000 siblings, children, parents and loved ones. For comparison, overdoses accounted for at least 16,000 deaths in 2010 and over 4,000 in 1999; the seriousness of this tragedy cannot be overstated.

How Did This Happen?

While this is a very complicated issue with many different facets, what is known is that during the 1990’s the pharmaceutical companies claimed that prescription opioid pain relievers were not addictive and encouraged doctors to prescribe these medications for pain relief.

Like cigarette companies in the 1930’s who claimed smoking was actually good for your health; these pharmaceutical companies were dead wrong. And just like the cigarette companies - being wrong hasn’t stopped them from profiting immensely from this escalating crisis.

The truth is, these drugs are highly addictive because of the euphoric high they provide. Over time, a user has to take more and more to achieve the same effects and in the process their brain becomes physically dependent on the substance.

Once they become addicted and are unable to get enough from their doctors and pharmacies many turn to street drugs like heroin - OR - Increase their dosage and die from accidental respiratory failure.

Stigma

The sad unfortunate truth about the situation is that society looks at these individuals as criminals instead of the victims that they are.

Addiction is a disease of the brain and we need to start looking at it for what it is - If we have any hope of fixing this problem before losing countless more loved ones, countless additional members of our communities will struggle in silence.

You can be addicted to more than just drugs or a bottle of alcohol, so please stop shaming those who are afflicted by it.

If you or someone you know is affected by any type of addiction, please encourage them to get help.

We need to stop judging each other so harshly because that’s exactly what keeps so many from reaching out for the help they desperately need.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration has a free, confidential hotline that can be called at any time at 1-800-662-4357. You can also visit their official website to find nearby treatment services.

‘Prescription Addiction’

Now with the stage set, Discovery of an Afterlife would like to announce the release of our latest single “Prescription Addiction” off our upcoming EP “Mistakes We Make.”

This song is about the struggles of various prescribed addiction’s and the disgusting profits pharmaceutical companies have made on the backs of the poor and vulnerable.

Furthermore, it’s about how pill-happy the medical industry has become. We all want a quick fix now to our ailments, our depression, our weight problems, our chronic pain and pharmaceutical companies are more than happy to give it to us for a price.

These issues stem from the very base of our society’s foundation and there is a deeper problem lurking underneath this opioid crisis. Our institutions are fundamentally broken and we’re not sure that anything short of a revolution is going to save us. Medication can’t fix everything and it certainly can’t fix how isolated we’re becoming as a society.

We believe that coming together as a community to support each other is what will overcome this growing feeling of isolation. We are social creatures after all and whether we want to admit it or not; we crave connection.

It may sound idealistic, but if everyone had a community that loved and cared for them, and they truly felt that love; they wouldn’t have a reason to turn to these addictions in the first place.

An Arbitrary War on Drugs

It baffles us that substances like alcohol and cigarettes which claim millions of lives every year are treated as “recreational fun”… yet cannabis, a plant that has resulted in exactly 0 fatalities EVER and has been proven to provide positive medical benefits, is treated as a schedule 1 drug by the DEA.

Now that the establishment is finding profits in the marijuana industry, it’s only a matter of time before this is changed, which is encouraging, but it will never change how many people, especially people of color, that have been locked behind bars over a plant.

This fundamental hypocrisy is what “Prescription Addiction” is about. We’re all very proud to finally be able to release this song and we sincerely hope you enjoy it.

Prescription Addiction is now available on itunes, spotify, amazon, youtube, and all other major music streaming services!

Come on!

This establishment is terrified of everything

Anything that might make you

Open up and see that there is more than just one way

To live a life, to make a move

I dare you to take a stand they say

I dare you to resist abuse

For review perception makes up all reality

And their religion is the profit school

It’s no secret, there’s no future

Vices come in more shapes than a bottle of alcohol

It won’t heal if, there’s no sutures

You can be addicted to the scent of an afterthought

Some people live above the law

And some people can’t afford to ever get caught

So why try at all when you already know you’ve lost?

She only wants the things she knows she cannot have

She says it tastes the best when someone says you can’t

I try to do the right thing I try to if I can

But more and more I’m finding

That’s hard to understand

Every piece of me

Is screaming for relief

I’d give it all

To make it stop

It turns out

That everything they ever told

Was just another lie to control

I might come back someday

But for now I just want to waste away

Just like that, abandoned and locked away

Without a thought labeled a menace to society

Looked at like she’s some creature

Ripped straight from jeepers creepers

She feels this pressure all the time

The pain is always on her mind

Her dealer wears a white coat

And always has the perfect dose

He doesn’t make house calls

Business hours on the wall

This endless war has got to stop

We’re only fighting the symptoms

There has to be a deeper cause

For all this self medication

I reach in, an attempt to find myself again

It’s then I know I am never coming back from this

Resist temptation

Here comes the tidal wave

Look down your nose and cast your shame

but you’ve got your own sick habits

Your addiction’s written on your grave

Your time spent throwing stones at glasses

You know you’ll always be this way

Exposing faults in others just to cover up your pain

Every piece of me

Is screaming for relief

I’d give it all

To make it stop

It turns out

That everything they ever told

Was just another lie to control

I might come back someday

But for now I just want to waste away

If I could find a way to turn back time

(To turn back time)

I’d fix it all I’d lead the perfect life

(The perfect life)

But these mistakes we make they do define

(They do define)

The line we draw between what’s wrong and right

What’s wrong and right?
